Study finds psychiatric disorders persist 15 years after youth are detained

 E-Mail
CHICAGO - A new study shows that youth arrested as juveniles with psychiatric disorders that remain untreated, struggle with mental health and successful outcomes well beyond adolescence.
Research from Northwestern Medicine shows nearly two-thirds of males and more than one-third of females with one or more existing psychiatric disorders when they entered detention, still had a disorder 15 years later.
The findings are significant because mental health struggles add to the existing racial, ethnic and economic disparities as well as academic challenges from missed school, making a successful transition to adulthood harder to attain.
Kids get into trouble during adolescence. Those from wealthier families also use drugs and get into fights. But these situations are most often handled informally by the school and parent, and don t culminate in arrest and detention, said lead author Linda Teplin, Owen L. Coon Professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at ....

Pregnancy can increase the risk of morbidity and mortality in women with cardiovascular disease; however, many cardiologists are not having pre-pregnancy contraception discussions with their patients of child-bearing age. There is a need to provide evidence-based guidance for contraceptive safety and effectiveness and pregnancy planning options for this high-risk patient group, according to a paper published in the

Lincoln Park Vaccine Site Targets People of Color in ZIP Codes With High COVID-19 Rates – NBC 7 San Diego

Mack says he hates needles, but he thinks getting vaccinated is the right thing for his community.
“I definitely feel a lot more comfortable going out. And not only for us, but for other people,” said Mack.
The vaccination site was hosted by the City of Hope International Church. Many of the people who were vaccinated said they heard about the site through their pastor, or through a friend. The word-of-mouth outreach made the experience more comfortable for some people.
“Southeast San Diego and these zip codes have been the hardest hit and many people were apprehensive about who was asking them to get vaccinated, so when you get faith based leaders, it helps,” said Francine Maxwell, President of the NAACP, San Diego Chapter. ....

Opinion | How Lower-Income Americans Get Cheated on Property Taxes

values. It is separate from the newsroom.

Americans expect to pay property taxes at the same rates as their neighbors. But across most of the United States, flat-rate property taxation is a sham.
Local governments are failing at the basic task of accurately assessing property values, and there is a clear and striking pattern: More expensive properties are undervalued, while less expensive properties are overvalued. The result is that wealthy homeowners get a big tax break, while less affluent homeowners are paying a higher price for the same public services.
Across the nation, lower-priced homes are assessed at a higher value relative to their actual sale price. ....
