Caserta honored as Dependable Leader by Boys & Girls Club of America
HOLLAND For 14 years, Justin Caserta has helped make a difference in the lives of area students through his work at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland.
In recognition of his leadership, Caserta was one of seven Boys & Girls Club of America employees nationwide chosen for the Maytag Dependable Leader Award.
“I was surprised. It’s definitely a special honor to be picked as one of seven from the Boys & Girls Club of America,” Caserta said. “I think it’s a good recognition for our club as a whole, for the program, for some of the things we have accomplished. I feel like it is a full team award.” ....

Community Foundation awards $176,880 in community stabilization grants

HOLLAND The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ) announced Thursday $176,880 in grant awards through its Community Stabilization Fund.
The grants awarded focus on three areas of investment financial stability, mental health and substance abuse and education.
Good Samaritan Ministries received $50,000 to continue its eviction diversion program. The program helped 487 families remain in their homes in 2020, and will have an opportunity to receive additional federal funds to continue and expand upon that work.
Community Action House was awarded a $15,000 grant to increase the amount of food secured through its “food rescue” efforts. The funding helped CAH procure equipment needed to increase their efforts by 17,500 pounds of feed every month. ....

West Ottawa s Nayeli Mora wins Michigan Youth of the Year honor
HOLLAND A local high-schooler has been recognized at the state level for her academic achievements, high character and service to the community.
West Ottawa senior Nayeli Mora was named the Michigan Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club last weekend. Mora earned the Youth of the Year honor at the local level in February.
“I was in shock, just super excited,” Mora said of her reaction to the award. “I’m really honored, it feels like a lot of responsibility (to represent the state). I’m happy to continue to use my voice to talk about things that are important to me, about social justice issues.” ....

Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year: Nayeli Mora ‘s essay on how she overcame bullying and embraced her culture. Mora was bullied in elementary and middle school as she struggled to learn English. As the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland’s 2021 Youth of the Year, she hopes to use her voice and her story to make a difference in her generation and inspire her peers to advocate for themselves. ....

Careerline Tech Center students donate food to Holland Rescue Mission

HOLLAND A program at the Careerline Tech Center recently raised money to provide for a pair of area nonprofits.
Students in the Culinary Arts program at the CTC, a service of the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, raised money by selling homemade jam and other goods. The students then used that money to support Holland Rescue Mission.
Funds raised each school year typically go toward field trips, class projects and charities. During student-led monthly meetings, students decided to use the money this year to support community members who have been significantly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Students put together 175 boxed meals that were distributed through Holland Rescue Mission and the Gateway Community Center. Students were responsible for developing a menu, making the food, and then packing and preparing the boxes for distribution. ....
