Artist Uses Driftwood to Create ‘Gnarly’ Sculptures That Seem to Have a Life of Their Own
Washington-based artist Jeffro Uitto has made a career of turning nature’s rubbish into art.
Collecting pieces of driftwood he finds washed up along the shoreline, Uitto creates majestic composite sculptures of animals and other forms some functional, some aesthetic bringing new life to dead wood.
The artist has been collecting driftwood since high school, with the varied, versatile material fast becoming his favorite medium for sculpture. By collecting driftwood, the artist is also clearing away natural debris from the shores of Tokeland, the banks of Smith Creek, or the valleys between the Willapa Hills. ....

Zimbabwean sculptor David Ngwerume will tell you that his country has beautiful stones. “I’m taking advantage of that beauty to capture the world’s attention,” the 40-year-old says.

David Ngwerume gestures to his garden, in a leafy Harare suburb, where his latest creations stand beneath the boughs of shady trees.
“Most of these stones that you see as sculptures are found along mineral belts and some of them are mineral ores,” he says.
Take black springstone, a hard serpentine rock that is rich in iron. It polishes to a beautiful black and is the stone from which he created “Arms”, one of a series of Covid-19 themed sculptures that has taken Zimbabwean social media ....

Large pink inflatable tentacles are part of a retrospective exhibition of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama in Berlin.
More than seven decades of her work is being celebrated, from her signature polka dots to infinity rooms.
Stephanie Rosenthal, curator of show and director of Martin Gropius Bau said, We have almost 250 works in 19 rooms. It is really an exhibition that shows that she both wrote art history and that she is still today one of the most progressive artists.
