Fred Moallankamp, 98, of Olmsted, and formerly of Mound City, died at 10:34 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2021, just four days before his 99th birthday.
Mr. Moallankamp was born on April 17, 1922, in Mound City. He was the much loved son of Sylvester Jackson and Beulah Mae Dumm Moallankamp.
He was a robust character from his many life experiences.  He was an E2 in the Navy during World War II on the USS Saratoga, one of the Navy’s first aircraft carriers. 
Upon return from the war, he married Bertha and whisked her off to Chicago, where he worked several jobs before returning to his hometown of Mound City.   ....

Bergenfield NJ cemetery holds Francis Jackson, former slaves


Arnold Brown says he has some answers. 
The Englewood historian came forward this week in response to a NorthJersey.com story about the long-forgotten burial site and the freed slave who owned the land. 
According to a plaque at the grassy field on Cedar Street, Francis Jackson  purchased 7¾ acres of woodland here in 1868 that later included a church and a cemetery where former slaves are believed to be buried.
Who was Francis Jackson?
Brown, who is writing a book about the early history of African Americans in Bergen County, said he found out about Jackson while researching the Gethsemane Cemetery in Little Ferry. That cemetery is one of the oldest African American burial sites in New Jersey. ....
