As a Member of Congress, I had the privilege of knowing several recipients of the Medal of Honor.  In fact, I was honored to be a speaker at the funeral of the extraordinary Desmond Doss.
My relationship with Charles Coolidge was very different for all the right reasons..
Yes, when he finally left this earth Tuesday with a direct ticket to his Savior the Lord Jesus, Chattanooga lost its most prominent citizen.
And as the oldest Medal of Honor recipient, our still great nation lost one of its true-to-life heroes.
But I got to know Charles Coolidge in a much more personal way.   When he was not able to attend his beloved First Presbyterian church, he would often attend Red Bank Baptist church on Dayton Boulevard. ....

Mary Lou Ziegler Lyons, 94, went to be with her Savior on February 2, 2021.
She was born in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, October 31, 1926, to the late Ed and Esther Ziegler. At nine years of age, her parents moved to Frankfort, Kentucky, where she became a Christian at the age of 12. She graduated from high school, having received the Bausch and Lomb three-year science award and the Valedictory award. She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences. She taught school for three years, having previously married her high school sweetheart. Following several transfers as her husband was employed with the Bell Telephone System, they made Chattanooga their permanent home. ....

Memorial Service For Legendary Coach Tom Weathers Will Be Wednesday At Red Bank High

A funeral service for legendary Red Bank High School football coach Tom Weathers will be held Wednesday at the school.
 
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. at the Red Bank High School gymnasium. The service will follow promptly at 7 p.m.
 
 
He was born November 22, 1939 in Columbus, Miss., to the late William Lewis Weathers and Ludy Williamson Weathers.
Coach Weathers graduated high school at New Hope High (‘57), in Columbus MS. He was recruited by Coach Scrappy Moore to play football for the Moccasins at the University of Chattanooga where he was a four-year letterman and a two-year captain. He received a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education (‘62) at UC. He later received his M.A. degree in Health and Physical Education (‘69) at Tennessee Tech. ....

Coach Weathers had a long and successful coaching career that lasted 44 years. He began his career in Atlanta GA, coaching as an assistant at Cross Keys High School and Lovett High School from 1962-64. From 1964-67, he served as assistant football coach and co-head wrestling coach at Kirkman Tech High in Chattanooga. He was an assistant football coach at Tennessee Tech University (‘67-’ ....
