CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - School safety and security was under the microscope Tuesday night in Charlottesville.
Charlottesville City Schools hosted a virtual forum Tuesday, January 12, to discuss the use of school resource officers (SROs), which are already no longer in CCS buildings, as well as other security measures.
Those talks included hearing from representatives from schools in Alexandria and Toronto about their models for safety.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The University of Virginia Judiciary Committee (UJC) is revealing how many students faced penalties in the COVID-19 affected fall semester, and what those punishments were.
The UJC revealed just 23 cases were adjudicated during the fall semester, dealing with 61 students. Just 9 of the cases were related to COVID-19 violations, but those incidents involved 43 of the students brought before the committee.
The UJC handed down a range of penalties, including 5 suspensions and 2 expulsions, but both of those were held “in abeyance”: on hold unless the student was reported for a follow-up violation. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Virginiaâs congressional delegation was in the eye of the storm as insurrectionists swarmed the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Now, they are picking up the pieces â literally in some cases â and promising to hold those responsible accountable.
As the violence unfolded, Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine found themselves caught in the middle. They recalled tense moments, as Vice President Mike Pence was whisked away, followed by a 20 minute lockdown, before being evacuated out of the building. That chaotic scene resulted in them being separated from colleagues and staffers, only to find each other safe hours later. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville Police plan to hold a news conference Thursday to discuss the recent outbreak of gun violence in the city.
This comes after two reports of shots fired late Tuesday night. The first happened on 6th Street SE, and the second happened on Prospect Avenue.
Emergency crews treated one woman at the scene on Prospect Avenue for minor injuries.
This marks the eighth report of gun violence in the city since November 5, 2020. ....
