America’s “sweet land of liberty” of “pilgrims’ pride” and Plymouth Rock has historically had a Protestant-majority understanding of “our father’s God.” But Catholics also revered this “author of liberty.”
These “noble free” made leading contributions to “freedom’s holy light” in the American Revolution, as Catholic author Dan LeRoy reveals in an important new book,
Liberty’s Lions: The Catholic Revolutionaries Who Established America.
Catholics were a small minority in colonial America. “Common estimates suggest between 1.2 and 1.6 percent of colonists were Catholic,” LeRoy notes. “In a nation of 2.5 million people, that amounted to between 30,000 and 40,000 Catholics.” ....

Liberty ISD Education Foundation grants surpass $250,000

The Liberty ISD Education Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s grant winners. Seven grants were awarded in this cycle to teachers for all 4 LISD campuses. These grants are funded through contributions to the Liberty ISD Education Foundation by individual donors, businesses, corporations and community service organizations as well as through profits from our fundraising events. This year’s seven grants total $28,555.02. Since 2007, the total is $255,268!

KENEFICK ACTIVITIES CLUB
(The following is an account from Reporter Iva Votaw on her perspective of small-town life in Kenefick, Texas, since 1967. She quite pleasantly relates not only her personal feelings but also the cohesive spirit of Kenefick Activities Club and all that they have accomplished and continue to do since the creation of the club.)
Kenefick is a small community located five miles north of Dayton, Texas. It has beautiful little hills with lots of pine trees and you cross three little creeks if you travel to Kenefick from Dayton.
I moved to Kenefick in March of 1967. It was a quiet community with friendly neighbors and there was one little store run by Maggie Simmons and her son, Gordon and his wife, Clarabelle. Everyone knew you by your first name, and if they didn’t, they would make it a point to get to know it. We had party lines and everyone knew what was going on in the community. Sometimes, you had to wait your turn if you were on an eight-part ....

The Midland author, a journalist and faculty member at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, provides the historical account of the Catholics who helped lead the American Revolution. The 12-chapter book profiles statesmen, thinkers and military leaders instrumental in founding our nation. The book contends that the Revolution was an event fundamentally shaped by the beliefs and experiences of American Catholics.
Available on March 23 through Sophia Institute Press, the book will sell for $18.95 in paperback from amazon.com
LeRoy has authored three other books, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The Village Voice and Esquire online. Since 2006, he has been the director of the Writing and Publishing Department at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland. ....
