Big rains in backcountry means more local water for Vista

WARNER SPRINGS —
Runoff from big storms that soaked the region this winter have more than tripled the size of Lake Henshaw, meaning the Vista Irrigation District can cut back on its purchase of imported water -- potentially saving the district and its customers big money down the line.
The district owns the man-made lake near Warner Springs, as well as 43,000 acres of watershed land that lies to the east, north and south of it.
Water from the lake, held back by a dam built almost 100 years ago, is taken via canal to Lake Wohlford near Escondido and to Dixon Lake in Escondido, where it is mixed with imported water and then evenly split between Vista and Escondido water districts and piped to their customers.

Nestled in the Cuyamaca Mountains about an hour northeast of San Diego and two-and-a-half hours southeast of Los Angeles is the tiny town of Julian, California, population 1,502 (2010 census). Julian was formed in 1869, when Confederate soldiers and cousins Mike Julian and Drury Bailey settled in the area, hoping to strike gold. Named in honor of Mike Julian, the town experienced an almost immediate increase in population with the discovery of gold in a nearby stream by former enslaved cattleman, A.E. “Fred” Coleman in 1870—spurring San Diego’s first and only gold rush that lasted until about 1900. A bronze plaque near Town Hall commemorates the city’s early Black history, as Julian once boasted the majority of San Diego’s Black population: in the 1880 census, 33 of 55 Black residents living in San Diego County lived in the Julian area.

Farmers Want to Create San Diego's Carbon Dumps — Voice of San Diego

Farmers Want to Create San Diego's Carbon Dumps
The county committed to being carbon-neutral by 2035 but it will have to create many projects to capture carbon to hit that goal. Farmers could help – but only if the rules change to make it easier.
Bea Alvarez pierced the Pauma Valley earth with the metallic bit of her cylindrical soil tester.
She’s been tracking the amount of carbon her farm retains if she adds compost and rarely tills the land. Tilling exposes carbon from dead plants to oxygen in the air, creating carbon dioxide, which is the planet’s most troublesome climate-changing gas.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whenever snow settles into San Diego County, many residents tend to flock to the mountains and East County to enjoy some wintertime fun.
Places like Palomar Mountain, Mt. Laguna, Alpine, and Julian find themselves bustling and playing host to tourists, but also traffic and trash left behind by those stopping in for the snow.
With that said, there are several things to keep in mind when heading to the mountains in order to stay safe, be kind, and have fun:
