In the aftermath of two headline-grabbing attacks over the past six months, more high-profile security researchers and analysts are beginning to cast a wary eye at internal systems and technology tools.
The SolarWinds breach, a compromise of third-party software used to protect networks in the U.S. government and four-fifths of Fortune 500 companies, was discovered in December and continues to play out in terms of damage. That was followed by the discovery in March that four previously unknown or “zero day” or yet-undiscovered vulnerabilities had been found in Microsoft Exchange Server software, which is used by 57% of Cloud Exchange mailboxes and 43% of on-premises clients. ....

Popular routers found vulnerable to hacker attacks

Millions of Brits could be at risk of cyberattacks due to poor default passwords and a lack of firmware updates
Millions of Brits use Wi-Fi routers that contain various security flaws and may put them at risk of cyberattacks, an investigation by British consumer watchdog Which? has found.
Together with Red Maple Technologies, Which? looked at 13 commonly used older router models offered by various British internet service providers (ISPs) and found that over half of them didn’t meet the security standards of today. The main issues affecting routers suplied by ISPs such as Virgin, EE, Sky, TalkTalk, and Vodafone were weak default passwords, local network vulnerabilities, and the lack of firmware updates to patch security loopholes. ....

Avoid Consumer Routers

I think it is a mistake to use a consumer router. The big reason is that their security is not acceptable.
I say this fully aware that my opinion runs counter to
every article you will ever read about buying a router. Consumer routers are marketed, and reviewed in the tech press, based on speed, features, speed, price, speed, appearance and speed. Security
never factors into the equation. These are, to me, the wrong priorities.
The Small Net Builder website offers a recent example. The article, How To Buy A Wireless Router - 2018 Edition (by Tim Higgins Jan. 25, 2018) focuses on MIMO streams vs. Class, Single point vs. Multipoint routers, Device roaming, Tri-band extenders, 8 stream 11ac and 802.11ax. To me, the most important decision when buying a router is to get one with ....

IoT security picks up momentum -- GCN

By Stephanie Kanowitz
Jan 25, 2021
The internet-of-things market is expected to reach $1.6 trillion by 2025, but a lack of security standardization will threaten the development of IoT services, a report states.
“The fervent expansion of IoT connectivity and subsequent monetization strategies have revealed cavernous security concerns fueled by the lack of proper security standardization,” according to ABI Research’s “68 Technology Trends That Will Shape 2021.” Attacks on connected infrastructure, transportation and smart cities are becoming more frequent and sophisticated.
“The lack of security in IoT is not something new,” said Dimitrios Pavlakis, industry analyst at ABI Research. “IoT players usually focus on connectivity over security, and that makes sense [though] it might not seem as efficient from the point of view of a security analyst.” ....

WordPress sites account for more than one-third of all websites on the Internet, including some of the most highly trafficked sites and numerous e-commerce sites. So it stands to reason that companies would spend a lot of time and resources on protecting site security, right?
Unfortunately, says Ted Harrington, executive partner at Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), too many organizations believe that because WordPress runs on open source, it s innately secure. ....
