Dame Georgina Mace, who has died of cancer aged 67, defined the scientific criteria for different categories of threat in the so-called Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species.
When the list first emerged in the 1960s, it was drawn up on the basis of experts’ subjective recommendations and tended to be biased towards the more popular and attractive mammal species, such as pandas, polar bears and white rhinos. ....
