The fight against climate change may be taking a striking new turn under the Biden administration. The White House is calling climate action a form of environmental justice, part of a campaign to address economic and racial inequity.
It s bringing new attention and, potentially, a flood of cash to low-tech approaches to climate action that directly benefit low-income neighborhoods. They include aid for home renovations and upgrades to city transportation infrastructure, including buses.
The environmental justice community, and many of our Black and brown communities, have identified the connection between climate change and their own community infrastructure. They can t be disconnected, says Cecilia Martinez, senior director for environmental justice at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. ....

Binghamton receives $330,000 in funding for environmental project
BINGHAMTON (WBNG) Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the City of Binghamton was awarded $330,000 in grants for an Environmental Justice Community project.
Binghamton was awarded the grant for its Deco District Green Infrastructure to revitalize downtown.
According to Cuomo s Office, the installation of stormwater street trees and bio-retention will help improve the water quality of the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers.
The funding was part of a $12 million grant aimed at awarded projects that impact environmental justice communities, which were part of the Green Innovation Grant Program.
It was announced alongside nearly $20 million in water quality grants, which were made available through New York State s Consolidated Funding Application for infrastructure projects that improve water quality. ....

Several localities across New York are getting state funding to support infrastructure projects that will improve water quality.
In addition to enhancing water quality, the funding will also help mitigate the effect of climate change through green storm water infrastructure, as well as support energy and water efficiency projects.
Stable infrastructure is a requirement for clean water, yet it can be a struggle for communities to cover the cost of planning. These grants offer the means to pay for necessary early planning to kick start these critical projects,” said Cuomo. Building on a commitment of environmental justice and protecting public health, Mayor Janey today, Chief of Environment, Energy and Open Space Reverend Mariama White-Hammond, and GreenRoots advocate Noemy Rodriguez, to urge Eversource to justify or cancel its proposed electrical substation in East Boston.
“As mayor of Boston, I will not remain silent when the people of East Boston are crying out,” said Mayor Janey. “From what I have seen, the substation plan is based on flawed projections and flawed priorities.
