Massachusetts Looks to Ban Gasoline-Powered Vehicle Sales by 2035

Massachusetts Looks to Ban Gasoline-Powered Vehicle Sales by 2035
Massachusetts is ready to follow in California’s footsteps as it moves toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and looks to ban gasoline-fueled vehicles in a bill that was passed earlier this month.
Under a program that has been in the works for months, the overall goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 to 45% below 1990 levels. As Massachusetts slowly increases renewable energy alternatives, last year it was already 22% below its 1990 levels.
The plan outlines ways to achieve further emissions reductions by 2030 and beyond, according to Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Kathleen Theoharides. The major goal is to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles and require the sale of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) by 2035. PROVIDENCE  Thirteen years after joining a pioneering regional compact to slash greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants, Rhode Island is set to become a founding member of another groundbreaking effort to cut pollution from cars and trucks in a bid to combat climate change.
The Ocean State on Monday joined its neighbors Connecticut and Massachusetts, as well as the District of Columbia, in signaling its intention to form what’s known as the Transportation Climate Initiative, a cap-and-invest program that would place limits on carbon emissions from gasoline and diesel and require suppliers of the fuels to buy credits to sell them. ....
