The 1921 Flood Changed Pueblo Forever. What Has Recovery Looked Like?

Hart Van Denburg/CPR News
The Riverwalk in downtown Pueblo, on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. The Riverwalk grew out an area of the city destroyed the Arkansas River when it flooded in 1921. In the aftermath, the city redirected the Arkansas around the city to the south.
A century ago the Arkansas River flowed through Pueblo in the channel that is now the HARP, or the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo. In 1921, swollen by rain and snowmelt, the river overtopped its levees and roared through the low-lying areas of downtown Pueblo, taking the lives of hundreds of people, leaving a 300 square mile swath of destruction and changing the course of the city’s history.

Pueblo's first food court and affordable apartments coming to downtown

The next step of the Holmes Hardware building’s $15.3 million revitalization is just around the corner after Denver-based commercial real estate developers closed on the purchase of the historic structure at 400 S. Union Ave. Friday.
Fuel and Iron Project developers Nathan Stern and Zach Cytryn, who work with about 40 different restaurants in Denver as professional real estate brokers, hope to close on their financing package July 9 which will allow for construction work to begin July 19 on the landmark building.
If construction work all goes as planned, the ground-floor food court — the first ever for Pueblo — will open around May 1, 2022.
The 33,000-square-foot Union Avenue gem was rebuilt in 1915 after the 1911 wood-framed version was destroyed by fire. It withstood the 1921 flood and housed Holmes Hardware until 1948.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Under the amended statewide mask mandate, Coloradans are now able to remove masks in public indoor spaces with more than ten people if at least 80% of people present have proof of vaccination.
Despite that change, Solar Roast Coffee in Downtown Colorado Springs said it's still proceeding caution.
“You have to wear your masks when you come up to the counter, when you order, when you go to the bathroom," said Lexy Hesselberg, Assistant Manager at Solar Roast Coffee.
Hesselberg said all staff will continue to wear masks, even though the majority of them are fully vaccinated.

Is Colorado Ready To Face The Next Phase Of The Pandemic Without A Statewide Mask Mandate?

Hart Van Denburg/CPR News
Masks litter alleys and sidewalks in Denver’s LoDo and RiNo neighborhoods during the coronavirus pandemic, Thursday, March 11, 2021.
Update April 2, 2021: Gov. Polis signed a new executive order extending the mask mandate for another 30 days but altered some of the restrictions. Counties that move to the green level on the state's color-coded COVID-19 dial will be allowed to drop the mask mandate starting on April 3. Masks will still be required, however, in schools, child care settings, public areas of government buildings and select indoor settings. The governor is still encouraging Coloradans to keep wearing a mask, even in counties that are released from compliance. Our original story continues below.
