A long time coming, I had decided that Main Street was going to be the site of my next walk. In spite of its proximity to Ottawa’s core, Old Ottawa East seems to fly below the radar. As a street that is loaded with examples of so much of the city’s history, the walk down Main is one of my favourites. Although it was part of a much longer walk (I wound up at Elmvale), I have chosen to focus on Main, between Hawthorne and the bridge. ....

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney gave his first “State of the City” address since being reelected.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said the city has acquired the land at 1305 North 5th Street - the known location of the historic Burial Ground for Freed People of Color.
The city bought the land, which was sold for auction, for $145,000.
The 1.21 acres were part of a public burying ground for enslaved people and free people of color. It was established in 1816 by the city, and the last recorded burial was in 1879. ....

Although the modern oil industry is said to have begun with the drilling of the first oil well by Edwin Drake in Pennsylvania, it was the discovery of oil at Spindletop in Beaumont, Texas, that pushed the world into the age of crude oil. The exact date when this happened is January 10, 1901.
That day, an enormous geyser of oil exploded from a drilling site at Spindletop Hill coating the landscape with a thick slimy mess for hundreds of feet. Nobody had seen a gusher so powerful and so plentiful before. Soon a booming oil industry grew around Beaumont, and America’s oil production tripled overnight. Petroleum that was previously used only as a lubricant and in place of kerosene in lamps became the main fuel source for trains and ship, and new inventions such as automobiles and airplanes. ....
