St. Johnsbury Trucking was formed by brothers Harry and Milton (Mickey) Zabarksy in 1920 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Even earlier (1918), Maurice, the youngest brother, helped their father convert a roadster into a truck and began hauling area farmers’ milk to market.
As the company became more established, Harry and Mickey began hauling farmers’ milk and meat to Boston by truck, while the bulk of these commodities were shipped by rail. The company became a household name in 1927 following one of Vermont’s worst floods. The Zabarksy brothers branched out and hauled mail and household goods to service those affected by the flood after the railroad tracks and trestles had been washed away. ....

The making of a legend

In our great nation, with our political and economic systems, it is possible to achieve far more personal success than anywhere else in the world. When any person has a vision or a dream of something they would like to achieve, the human spirit is unleashed. With time, hard work and perseverance, they can and will achieve it.
I say this because of a news article I ran across the other day that epitomizes this better than anything I have ever seen, known or run across before. We were sitting on the couch at home one day, and my wife Janis handed me this news article about the late Harvey Jones that had great interest for me. The reason I was interested is because I had met Mr. Jones personally back in the 1970s when he was the sole owner of Jones Truck Lines located in Springdale, Arkansas. ....

Victorine 'Vicky' S. Mertes, active in community

Victorine Vicky S. Mertes, 95, of Indian Beach, Rehoboth, peacefully passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., March 12, 1925, daughter of the late Elsie Blanche (Hutchinson) and T. Henry B. Sanders.
Vicky graduated from Temple University High School in 1943 and attended Temple University and Drexel University. She then began working in the Petroleum Lab at Sun Oil Company in Marcus Hook, Pa., toward the end of World War II. After marrying, Vicky moved to Wilmington, and shortly before the birth of her daughter, became a full-time homemaker. As her children got older, she became a runway model with the Philadelphia Models Guild, appearing in many fashion shows in the Philadelphia and Wilmington areas. Once her children entered college, Vicky moved permanently to the family home in Indian Beach, where she resided until her death. ....
