Local officials told lawmakers this week a reluctant workforce impedes economic recovery for Pennsylvania businesses as pandemic restrictions ease across the state.
It’s a problem that disproportionately impacts the hard-hit hospitality sector, where year-over-year job losses still exceed 145,000. But local leaders say the reasons why remain complex.
“The employees are just taken care of well enough through unemployment compensation and the benefit add-on and they are just not interested in coming back,” said Robert Carl, president and CEO of the Schuylkill County Chamber of Commerce. “It’s not unusual at all.” ....

After a devastating year for the trans community in 2020, yet another trans woman of color has been killed in 2021. Chyna Carrillo, a 24-year-old Latinx trans woman, was reportedly murdered in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania last Thursday, making her death the seventh known trans homicide in the first two months of this year.
According to the local newspaper
New Castle News, Carrillo was beaten to death by Juan Carter Hernandez, a 33-year-old Marine Corps deserter who previously served time in prison for murdering his wife. Police officers responding to the scene ordered Hernandez to cease. When he refused to do so, Hernandez was shot and killed at the scene by one of the responding police officers, who has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation. ....

Kim Ward didn’t set out to be a politician. She chose to be a respiratory therapist.
But when she crossed paths with a young intern-turned AIDS activist, it sparked an interest in government and how she could play a role in it.
That was a lesson along with a few others, including ones instilled in her by her 82-year-old mother Joanna Renko, that helped Ward secure her place in Pennsylvania history. ....
