The president of the nation’s largest LGBTQ lobbying group encouraged Alabama state lawmakers to “do your jobs” and “protect all constituents in Alabama” and not vote to advance legislation restricting certain medical care for transgender youths.
But among supporters of controversial SB10, it could be the clock and not opposition from fellow Republicans, that becomes the bill’s undoing. The legislation passed overwhelmingly out of the Alabama Senate in early March, but remains stalled on the House floor and there is only one more day for lawmakers to act. The Legislature’s final session in which members of the legislative branch can advance bills to Gov. Kay Ivey’s desk is May 17. ....

The Alabama Senate passed the controversial anti-trans SB10 Bill on Tuesday, effectively prohibiting the performance of gender affirming medical treatment on minors. The Bill, which shall be called the Alabama Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, was introduced by Senator Shay Shelnutt and passed with a vote of 23-4.
Section 3 of the Bill prohibits any person from engaging in, counseling or making a referral for performance of various treatments such as through hormone therapy, puberty blockers, or surgical intervention, when performed with the intent of affirming the minor’s perception of his or her gender or sex. It also makes any performance of gender affirming medical procedure on a minor a Class C Felony as per Alabama’s Criminal Code. ....

MONTGOMERY Senator Shay Shelnutt of Trussville is once again sponsoring legislation aimed at reducing instances of elder financial abuse, a problem that costs older Americans billions of dollars every year.
Senate Bill 181, the Elderly and Vulnerable Adult Financial Protection Act, allows banks and credit unions to refuse or delay a transaction whenever financial abuse of a customer is suspected and the customer is at least 65 years of age or unable to manage his or her own affairs because of physical or mental impairment.
The bill unanimously passed the Alabama Senate last week and now moves to the Alabama House of Representatives. ....
