Ice-shelf retreat drives recent Pine Island Glacier speedup

Speedup of Pine Island Glacier over the past several decades has made it Antarctica’s largest contributor to sea-level rise. The past speedup is largely due to grounding-line retreat in response to ocean-induced thinning that reduced ice-shelf buttressing. While speeds remained fairly steady from 2009 to late 2017, our Copernicus Sentinel 1A/B–derived velocity data show a >12% speedup over the past 3 years, coincident with a 19-km retreat of the ice shelf. We use an ice-flow model to simulate this loss, finding that accelerated calving can explain the recent speedup, independent of the grounding-line, melt-driven processes responsible for past speedups. If the ice shelf’s rapid retreat continues, it could further destabilize the glacier far sooner than would be expected due to surface- or ocean-melting processes. ....

A Massive Study of Nearly Every Glacier on Earth Just Revealed a Devastating Trend

A Massive Study of Nearly Every Glacier on Earth Just Revealed a Devastating Trend
NICOLETTA LANESE, LIVE SCIENCE

Earth s glaciers are shrinking, and in the past 20 years, the rate of shrinkage has steadily sped up, according to a new study of nearly every glacier on the planet.
Glaciers mostly lose mass through ice melt, but they also shrink due to other processes, such as sublimation, where water evaporates directly from the ice, and calving, where large chunks of ice break off the edge of a glacier, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

By tracking how quickly glaciers are shrinking, scientists can better predict how quickly sea levels may rise, particularly as climate change drives up average global temperatures.  ....

Earth's Cryosphere Is Vital for Everyone. Here's How NASA Keeps Track of Its Changes. – Climate Change: Vital Signs of the Planet

In Brief:
Due to ice s important role in the Earth system, NASA is committed to studying it extensively.
Everything on our planet the land, the water, the air, people is connected by the various chemical, physical and biological processes that make up what we call the Earth system.
One of the key components of that huge system is the cryosphere, or all of Earth’s frozen water. This important “sphere” includes frozen soils in Alaska, the snow on top of the Himalayas, as well as all the ice in the polar regions.
Nowhere is the role of the cryosphere as evident as it is at high latitudes, where the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets cover most of the land, and where sea ice caps enormous sections of the polar waters. The vastness of that bright, white ice in addition to the huge areas covered by winter snow beyond polar regions helps control the global climate by reflecting some of the Sun’s radiation back into space. ....

Whale Bay, Antarctica No. 4, 2016. Zaria Forman uses soft pastels to recreate undeveloped landscapes that are increasingly at risk to climate change. “I was looking for something more meaningful to imbue in my work, something that was more than just a pretty picture for somebody’s wall,” she said. It was on a trip to Greenland that artist Zaria Forman first grasped the urgency of the climate crisis. She was traveling with her family and, having never been to a polar region before, planned to use the landscape as inspiration for her work. The hotel they were staying at was bustling, not with tourists, but with government officials, newscasters, and scientists all there to study the Greenland ice sheet. In 2007, most media outlets in ....

NASA finds what a glacier's slope reveals about Greenland Ice Sheet thinning

As glaciers flow outward from the Greenland Ice Sheet, what lies beneath them offers clues to their role in future ice thinning and sea-level rise contribution.
Outlet glaciers are rivers of ice flowing within the cracks of the bedrock and draining into the surrounding sea. They retreat and start to thin as climate warms, and this thinning works its way toward the center of the ice sheet. Now, by looking at the bed topography beneath the ice, scientists have a better understanding of which glaciers could have a significant impact on the Greenland Ice Sheet s contribution to sea-level rise in coming years. They found that some glaciers flowing over gentler slopes could have a greater impact than previo ....
