Pent-up demand, shortages fuel U.S. inflation

6 Min Read
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer prices surged in April, with a measure of underlying inflation blowing past the Federal Reserve’s 2% target and posting its largest annual gain since 1992, because of pent-up demand and supply constraints as the economy reopens.
The strong inflation readings reported by the Commerce Department on Friday had been widely anticipated as the pandemic’s grip eases, thanks to vaccinations, and will have no impact on monetary policy. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has repeatedly stated that higher inflation will be transitory.
The U.S. central bank slashed its benchmark overnight interest rate to near zero last year and is pumping money into the economy through monthly bond purchases. It has signaled it could tolerate higher inflation for some time to offset years in which inflation was lodged below its target, a flexible average. ....

Competing Infrastructure Pronouncements Use Large, Mostly Nonsensical Numbers

Competing Infrastructure Pronouncements Use Large, Mostly Nonsensical Numbers
A group of four Republican senators on May 27 unveiled a $928 billion infrastructurespending plan.
It was in response to U.S. President Joe Biden administration’s cutting about $74 billion from its proposed $2.3 trillion infrastructure proposal which, according to The Epoch Times’ analysis, was only intended to spend 21 percent on traditional infrastructure.
The administration now proposes $39 billion less for roads and bridges and $35 billion less for broadband.
The Biden administration has also moved some $480 billion of its proposed “infrastructure” spending into bills focused on research and development spending, or industrial policy. Therefore, it claims its “infrastructure” proposal is now only $1.7 trillion. ....

A measure that would cap the growth of state spending in Texas to match population changes is heading to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk.
The bill passed the House this week by a vote of 89 to 55, with Democrats and Republican Rep. Tom Craddick of Midland opposing it.
Filed by Sen. Kelly Hancock, R–North Richland Hills, the bill passed the Senate in April by a vote of 19 to 12. Hancock had introduced the bill three legislative sessions in a row.
The Texas Constitution already caps the spending of state tax revenue that is not dedicated by the Constitution for a particular purpose. State spending not constitutionally dedicated may not increase from one biennium to the next beyond the rate of growth in statewide personal income, unless the majority in both chambers waives the cap in a vote. ....
