Speech by Commissioner Schmit at the Porto Social Summit

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC), gepubliceerd op vrijdag 7 mei 2021.
Prime Minister Costa, Prime Minister Löfven,
Dear Presidents Sassoli, von der Leyen, and Michel,
Presidents, Prime Ministers,
Director-General of the ILO,

We are living in turbulent and fast-changing times. And it is critical that these changes happen in a socially-fair way.
During the pandemic, our welfare states have protected Europeans lives and income. And the EU showed true solidarity by immediately making the SURE instrument a reality to support Member States. ....

That’s kind of brilliant, and turning toilet water into a banana split is sweet revenge over fire served cold. But who is going to mind the buffers?
Newsom can’t admit we’re in a drought as the one screwup not his fault, could be the straw that broke the camel’s back if there’s a recall election, funny that.
Talking wildfires, you never know how its going to turn out. Last year was a disaster, while the year before was no big deal. This one has me worried as a friend was relating that the water content of Chamise in the medium climes in April was more what you would expect of in August in the midst of the 100 days of 100 degrees in the Central Valley, i.e. everything will be a tinderbox. ....

Rebuilding on Equal Foundations

This International Women’s Day takes place roughly one year after the start of the coronavirus pandemic. On 5 March last year we adopted the EU’s Gender Equality Strategy for this mandate with a number of measures aimed at ensuring that women are free, can lead and thrive on an equal basis to men, writes Helena Dalli.
Helena Dalli is a Maltese labour politician serving as European Commissioner for Equality.
When the virus hit us shortly after that, it did not take long before its disproportionate consequences for women were brought to light.
Women were at the frontline in hospitals and care work, and were exposed to the virus and its health risks while caring for others. Women helped ensure that our essential services were kept running. And yet, when childcare and schools closed, women were shouldering an even larger share of unpaid care work. We have also seen incidences of domestic violence increasing sharply during lockdown. ....
