The New Documentary, 'Trans in Trumpland,' Honors the Harsh Realities of Trans Life Under Trump

While there were numerous marginalized groups that suffered at the hands of the previous U.S. administration, looking back at Donald Trumpâs four years in office, few were targeted in such an outsize way as the trans community. Almost immediately after assuming the presidency, Trumpâs administration rolled back protections for trans students from discrimination, banned transgender people from serving in the military, and sanctioned that trans prisoners should be housed according to their birth-assigned sex.
Among the chaos and cruelty of these decisions, itâs easy to be overwhelmed by the statistics and to forget the very real human lives impacted by these decisions. It was this that spurred filmmaker Tony Zosherafatain to create his new documentary examining the lives of four individuals grappling with these various discriminatory laws, with the title coming to him early on in the process: ....

Trans in Trumpland is a four-part docuseries that was dreamed up by filmmaker Tony Zosherafatain the first week Donald Trump assumed the presidency in 2017. The title just came to me out of nowhere; it just popped into my head randomly one day. I immediately thought to myself, I have to roll with this title and create this film. Right after, I sat down and conceptualized the series, Zosherafatain told POPSUGAR. The director tapped his friend and collaborator Jamie DiNicola (the two run TransWave Films together out of New York), and they launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds, sharing their goal with followers and supporters: to document trans lives in some of the most conservative parts of the US, namely red states North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, and Idaho. ....
