While not as iconic as the Chevrolet Bel Air, the Pontiac Star Chief is one of the most beautiful GM car built in the mid-1950s. A highway cruiser offered in various body styles, the Star Chief was hot rot material too when fitted with the optional, 317-horsepower, 5.7-liter V8. It wasn't a popular choice with drag racers back then, but someone saw potential in a beat-up Star Chief and created "Joker," a full-blown gasser.

The car you're about to see below is a nostalgic drag racer that looks like it came from the 1960s NHRA racing scene. But it's actually a 1957 Star Chief shell recovered from an old garage and mounted on a straight-axle chassis. It's been rebuilt a few times since 2018 and it now features an aluminum floor, aluminum trunk, and a big-block Chevy V8 engine.

In Cuba, where American cars older than the average inhabitant are a common sight on city streets, Pablo Manso makes his living in a very particular niche: repairing Chevrolets from 1955, 1956 and 1957.
The self-taught technician plies his trade in a workshop he built 15 years ago at his home in Placetas, a small city in the rural center of the communist island.
He recreates Chevy parts with machines he built himself in a country where US sanctions have crippled imports of cars, parts and tools of the trade.

On the other hand, the Bel Air was already a highly successful model, and the 1957 version, in particular, was considered the icing on the cake in a lineup whose popularity was skyrocketing. Several celebrities, including Elvis Presley himself, drove such a model, as the king of rock ‘n’ roll showed up in a 1957 Bel Air during the annual Christmas parade in Austin.
Needless to say, the 1957 Bel Air has therefore become the dream of many collectors, though a model in mint condition obviously costs a small fortune these days.
So if you’re going for plan B and try to find an original model that could be restored, the one that we have here is definitely worth a look.

Produced from 1955 to 1957, the second-generation Chevrolet Bel Air is one of the most iconic 1950s designs. Part of the Tri-Five Chevy lineup, which also included the 150, 210, and Nomad, the Bel Air is now a full-fledged collectible that draws a lot of attention at auction events. Chevrolet built almost five million Tri-Five cars in three years, so they're not exactly rare, but well-maintained Bel Airs at relatively decent prices are hard to come by. This 1957 example is one of them.

Located in Fenton, Missouri, this two-door coupe is in almost pristine condition. I say "pristine" because even though it was "professionally restored," it happened some 30 years ago and it's showing a few rust spots on the body. However, it spent most of its post-restoration days as a garage queen and it needs just a few touch ups to become a concours-winner Bel Air.

The Chevrolet Bel Air is one of the most iconic American cars ever built. It survived from 1949 to 1980, but the mid-1950s models are the most coveted. Many argue that the 1957 Bel Air is the best of the bunch, but the 1955 version is nothing to sneeze at either. It doesn't have the 57's big fins, but you'd be hard-pressed to find another car that blends stylish cues with hot-rod looks in such an appealing way.

Luckily, Chevy built quite a few Bel Airs back in the 1950s, and many of them are still on the road. And because they're so hot-looking and popular, barn finds are usually restored. This 1955 Bel Air here is a fine example of how a classic should be brought back to life.

One of them is the addition of a 283 ci small-block V8 engine that was introduced specifically for 1957 and then carried over to the third-generation series as well. Until then, the Bel Air was available with a choice of three engines comprising two straight-six units – 215 and 235, and one 265 ci V8.
The new 283 ci unit developed over 280 horsepower, and it could be ordered with an improved Turboglide transmission, though the previous two-speed automatic continued to be offered as well.
The example that you see here retains pretty much everything from the original model, boasting a package that could easily catch the attention of someone looking for an unmolested 1957 Bel Air.

In 1957 and 1958, if anyone wanted a little more than a Chevrolet Bel Air, there was a clear address—Oldsmobile's 88 series. Better yet, there was the Oldsmobile Super 88, with its 371 cubic-inch (6.1-liter) Rocket V8 that could churn out 310 horsepower when equipped with the J-2 option.

In 1957, if you wanted a General Motors convertible, and wanted it to be a bit more than the Chevrolet Bel Air, you could have had an Oldsmobile Super 88. It was the top of the 88 lineup, powered by the 371 cubic-inch Rocket V8 producing 277 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The Super 88 could be had with either a three-speed manual or the much more common four-speed Hydromatic automatic transmission. By adding the optional J2 triple two-barrel carbs (similar to Pontiac’s Tri Power setup), power jumped to 300 ponies.
