Why Vaccine Certificates Trouble Both Biden and Boris Johnson

A
Opposition to Boris Johnson’s go-slow plan for reopening the economy and his too-vague plan for domestic vaccine passports has been growing in his Conservative Party. There are many arguments raised, but what really bothers some conservatives (small and big C) is the suspicion that his policies reflect a sizable shift in the role of the state in people’s lives.
Some are looking to the US, which is expecting the fastest growth since 1984 as states shed restrictions. Britain too has spent mightily to prop up the economy. Its vaccination program (with 59% of adults having received a first dose) is even more successful. They want Johnson to channel the American can-do mindset. After four months of the latest lockdown, they want to see more of the calculated risk-taking evidenced by the Vaccine Task Force, which designed Britain’s successful vaccine program. ....

Covid UK: Government risks backlash as vaccine passports to enter CLOTHES SHOPS aren't ruled out

British shoppers might be forced to show Covid vaccine passports to go clothes shopping, it was revealed today.
Downing Street refused to rule out allowing non-essential shops to demand proof of jab status today as it faced an ever-escalating backlash against the plans.
Sir Keir Starmer and Labour gave their clearest indication yet  that will oppose the rollout of the documents and vote alongside furious Tory backbenchers.
Some 40 Conservative MPs have already made clear they are against Covid Status Certification , warning that introducing the checks in everyday life would create a two tier nation.
Ministers have already ruled out requiring passports for essential shopping like for food and medicines, and said any changed would not happen before June.  ....

Ministers’ plans for Covid status certificates to help ease the UK out of lockdown risk descending into chaos after hospitality groups joined opposition parties and Conservative MPs in opposing the idea.
In a demonstration of the strength of feeling among dozens of Tories, backbencher Steve Baker said forcing people to show an app-based pass to go to shops, pubs or other crowded public places would create a “miserable dystopia of Checkpoint Britain”.
Labour plans to vote against the plans, calling them “discriminatory” and saying the party would in particular oppose the idea of passes being needed to go to most shops, a possibility spelled out in an official review of the idea published this week. ....

Coronavirus: WHO urges against COVID-19 vaccine passports, even for international travel

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has previously said the Australian airline will insist on vaccination as a condition of boarding and that such a requirement could be included in the company’s terms and conditions when booking a ticket. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said at the time that a compulsory vaccination stance was “premature;” IATA has developed a trial app or digital health pass where a passenger’s verified vaccination and testing records can be stored.
The US, Britain and UK have all said they will not make vaccinations mandatory.
A furious debate about vaccine passports is under way in Britain where three in five adults have already been vaccinated, causing the country’s coronavirus infections and related deaths to collapse to their lowest levels since last summer. ....

Pubs not in the clear over vaccine passports: No decision yet on 'papers for pints' scheme

comments
PM expected to announce wave of pilot events in April and May where proof of a jab will be required for entry
They include the FA Cup Final and semi-finals at Wembley, and the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield
Events also planned in Liverpool, including at a club that can hold 3,000 people, and a  comedy gig
But they will only be used to examine other measures like tests before entering, and ventilation systems
Ministers have yet to decide if pubs will have to force drinkers to show Covid passports before being allowed in, ahead of the launch of a pilot scheme that will use the FA Cup Final and a Liverpool nightclub to test ways for the UK s nightlife scene to burst back into life after Covid. ....
