(Reuters) - Lawmakers heard arguments on Wednesday in favor of amending laws to limit protections for non-bankrupt individuals through a company’s bankruptcy, a move prompted by concerns that members of the wealthy Sackler family who own Purdue Pharma LP may avoid accountability for their role in promoting opioid sales.

The hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law came as Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, along with Democratic Senators Dick Durbin of Illinois and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, as well as Democratic U.S. Representatives Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, both of New York, announced legislation in the House and Senate aimed at reforming certain areas of bankruptcy law. ....

A bipartisan group of lawmakers working on police reform have promised meaningful legislation on the issue, according to civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump described the very emotional meeting he and family members of several Black men killed by police had with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week.
The families bared their heart out. They told those legislators that this proposed legislation will have our families blood on it so it has to be meaningful. They all committed that it would be meaningful legislation, not watered down legislation, Crump said in an interview with CBSN anchor Anne-Marie Green on Thursday.  ....

A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers on Thursday started talks on a police reform bill, the day after Democratic President Joe Biden urged senators and representatives to act before the May 25 anniversary of George Floyd s murder by a Minneapolis policeman.

Reuters – A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers on Thursday started talks on a police reform bill, the day after Democratic President Joe Biden urged senators and representatives to act before the May 25 anniversary of George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis policeman.
