WWII hero Jim Booth celebrates 100th birthday | Somerset County Gazette


A FORMER submariner who served during World War II was treated to a personal performance from Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band Service on his 100th birthday.
Royal Navy veteran Jim Booth, from Taunton, was led to believe from his family that they were treating him to a birthday tea at nearby Bidwell House in Devon. But unbeknownst to Jim, Vicky his daughter had contacted the Naval Regional Commander who organised the spectacular musical treat, by the Corps of Drums of the Commando Training Centre’s Royal Marines Band.
Jim is considered one of the unsung heroes of WW2, especially for his role as a mini-submarine commander, working with the Combined Operations Pilotage and Reconnaissance Parties – COPP - a special covert group set up before D-Day to improve invasion techniques and collect details of the beaches. ....

Former Royal Marine awarded for dedicating time to Plymouth testing and vaccine centres | West Country


Roy Warnes was presented his award at South Brent Health Centre.
A former Royal Marine has been recognised by the military and the NHS for his dedication to volunteering at coronavirus testing and vaccination centres.
Roy Warnes was at the South Brent testing facility in Plymouth on the day it opened and has become an expert at informing the public as well as putting them at ease.
As a result of his efforts he was awarded with a commendation during a small ceremony at South Brent Health Centre.
Roy joined the Royal Marines in 1956, following in his father, grandfather and great grandfather’s footsteps. ....

Poppy Flight touches down in Timaru

Pilot Russell Brodie takes the bundled up poppy and star artworks from his Tiger Moth after flying from Rangitata Island to Timaru on Wednesday.
One hundred pupils from Timaru South School received a short history lesson when the Poppy Flight reached Timaru.
Pilot Russell Brodie made a delayed landing in his Tiger Moth at Timaru’s Richard Pearse Airport on Wednesday morning, bringing two artworks, one bearing poppies and the other stars, which are being carried around the country as part of a charity relay flight.
On arrival Brodie, who had flown from Rangitata Island, explained to the pupils, as well as members of the Returned Services’ Association and public, how the plane had been built in 1942. ....
