One of Newburgh's most notable pieces of architecture is the 1835 Dutch Reformed Church, located next to the Newburgh Free Library. Today, the front of the church features raised garden beds growing fresh vegetables as part of the Newburgh Urban Farm and Food Initiative.Cloey Callahan
City of Newburgh historian Mary McTamaney described the small, four-square-mile city of Newburgh as a “treasure box of architectural styles” with history captured in the building of the city’s blocks throughout the years.
“Newburgh was prosperous long enough to have many styles come and go in popularity,” said McTamaney.

Take a self-guided tour that explores Providence’s Black history from the early days of the Rhode Island colony to today.
We didn’t know that Frederick Douglass, the great Black abolitionist and orator, spent an enormous amount of time in Providence, advocating for an end to slavery, Black suffrage and a woman’s right to vote. “In one trip, he spoke six times,” says Ray Rickman, cofounder of Stages of Freedom, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering city youth and showcasing Rhode Island’s African-American history.
