Beloved Shelby priest passes away from brain disease
In the weeks before his death, Father Michael T. Kottar encouraged others to hold strong to their faith in God and to continue to strengthen others’ devotion to the Lord.
Diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, an extremely rare and aggressive brain disease for which there is no effective treatment or cure, Kottar began feeling dizzy in December, at times having to cancel mass. After what seemed like endless testing, in April he received the terminal diagnosis.
“It was hard to hear. I thought I’d have a few more years. But if God wants me now, then that’s what will be. I just can’t understand how anyone could get through something like this without faith,” Kottar said in early May before meeting a group of college seminarians. ....

Marta Jo Rubcich, 59, of Saginaw, MI passed away May 3rd peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
Marta was born in Wheeling, WV on January 2, 1962 to the late Adolph S. and Martha Lee (Flading) Rubcich.
The family moved to Shadyside, where she attended high school and excelled at basketball and softball. At the end of her junior year, the Shadyside faculty pre- sented Marta with a book entitled I Dare You! by William Danforth. The book had a profound impact on her life as Marta took the message of challenging herself and becoming a leader into all her pursuits, both professionally and personally. ....

For the first time in its 17-year history, Family Network of Wyoming has two female leaders of color, and half of its board members are women.
The nonprofit located at 1029 44th St. SW in Wyoming has a mission “to provide dignity and love like Jesus, bringing people together to build stronger, healthier communities” with a goal of “fostering a caring, kind and inclusive environment” to ensure that its clients “leave feeling dignified and respected.”
Family Network offers a food pantry; mobile food trucks; no-cost lending of durable medical equipment such as crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, bathroom aids and shower chairs; a Christmas Store; and additional events, resources and services to about 11,000 people per year. ....

Area churches slowly resuming normal operations

In the last 13 months, COVID-19 didnât just turn this county upside down â it also impacted the dozens of various houses of worship in the Gallatin Valley.
In the midst of library closures, government offices only doing business by e-mail, and everything else weâve learned to live with in the past year, whatâs going on worship-wise in the Gallatin Valley?
The Belgrade News called a handful of worship centers and learned that they mostly have traveled the same path â closing down last March, then streaming worship services, and now, finally, slowly opening back up to in-person worship.
Bethel Christian Reform Church in Churchill closed down for a few months last spring, then went to livestreaming services. It just recently went back to regular, in-person worship. It is still using pre-packaged communion, and hopes to be back to its ânormalâ schedule by early summer. ....
