New Orleans voters focused on crime with Mayor, City Council seats up for grabs this Fall


“The Morrell name certainly carries a lot of weight in the city, and he’s got the experience as well as the name recognition.   Palmer has been out there as well, in terms of this issue of moving City Hall into Municipal Auditorium, so that’s given her a lot of face time in the media.  And for Jared Brossett unfortunately most of the media attention has been negative as a result of the video that came out when he got into that accident on Elysian Fields,” Chervenak said.    
For more than a year, the pandemic dominated Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s first term in office.  While some critics say her COVID restrictions were excessive and stifled the city’s economy, Chervenak says so far, that doesn’t seem to be a real threat to her second term.  Chervenak says the pandemic may actually be a factor in that. ....

One day after WDSU reported on frustrated Gentilly residents dealing with flooded streets due to inactive construction, crews began making repairs to the roadway. New video sent by Eddy Guttierrez showed crews working on the street on Friday. Original report: People who live in Gentilly want answers from New Orleans city leaders. They say a road construction project hasn t been touched for months. Many say it s inconvenient and downright dangerous. Viewpoint: Term-limited Jared Brossett leads City Council in campaign cash

District D Councilman Jared Brossett almost has as much cash on hand in his campaign account than all the other council members combined. Brossett, who is term limited and expected to run for an at-large City Council position later this year, reported $103,471.61 in available dollars on his 2020 annual campaign finance report, which was filed last week. 
The other five City Council members (excluding newly appointed at-large member Donna Glapion) show a total of approximately $116,000 in available dollars.  
Brossett started 2020 with $102,178 in the bank and took in $1,750 during the year. Though his only donation in 2020 was to St. Augustine Church, Brossett’s 2019 expenditures included Biden for President, Kamala Harris for the People, JBE for Louisiana Leadership PAC and the McDonogh 35 Alumni Association. ....
