Recounts requested in close Surry elections
SURRY Close races for selectman and School Board member during the annual Town Meeting referendum have resulted in two candidates seeking recounts, according to Surry Town Clerk Angela Smith.
Smith will conduct the recount at the town office tomorrow, Thursday, April 29, at 5 p.m.
Selectman candidate Christopher Stark was elected to one open seat on the board by a narrow margin over Reginald D. Winslow Jr.
Stark took 216 votes to Winslow’s 205. Winslow has requested a recount. 
Stark, unless the recount changes the results, will replace former Selectman Bill Matlock, who decided not to run again. ....

BLUE HILL Late this winter, Blue Hill Garden Club President Peter Leonard was already thinking about the coming summer when he visited Steve Whitney’s Exploring Earth Systems classes at George Stevens Academy. Leonard spoke with students about a Blue Hill Community Garden on the school’s campus but he also was there to get help starting seeds for spring planting.
Students in Whitney’s three classes planted flats of onions, celery and broccoli. After they finished, Whitney connected the activity to their course subject matter with a discussion about what vegetables do beyond simply providing food and what plants need in order to grow. ....

Commission holds virtual ‘Poetry Out Loud’ state finals

In the first-ever statewide “Poetry Out Loud” competition held earlier this year – in which poetry recitations were recorded and scored by a panel of virtual judges – 10 students rose through the ranks of schoolwide and regional competitions to compete in the Maine state final, presented by the Maine Arts Commission.
The Maine poetry finalists included Emma Collins, North Yarmouth Academy; Hazel Dow, Waterville Senior High School; Katelyn Nestor, Gardiner Area High School; Emily Paruk, Gorham High School; Zeke Sitarz, Lisbon; Sofia Stockwell, North Haven Community School; Helen Strout, Cape Elizabeth High School; Rose Tuttle, Mount Ararat High School, Topsham; Ada Vancil, John Bapst Memorial High School, Bangor; and Magnolia Vandiver, George Stevens Academy, ....
