“We are excited to learn more about this proposed initiative as it would enhance the type of dining experiences our businesses would be able to provide to guests while demonstrating the Bowser administration’s genuine commitment to keeping our restaurants open and competitive,” a spokesperson for the association said in an email.

Bowser Booze Bill Proposes Allowing Public Drinking In Designated Areas In D.C.

As part of a sweeping reform of D.C. liquor laws unveiled on Tuesday night, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is proposing creating designated areas for public alcohol consumption along with a slew of other regulatory provisions aimed at boosting the city s economy.
Dubbed the Reopen Washington, D.C., Alcohol Act, the legislation would allow patrons to consume alcohol purchased at a bar or restaurant within a commercial lifestyle center, a large-scale commercial or mixed-use area like The Wharf, City Center, the Georgetown Waterfront, or the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
The commercial lifestyle center concept actually came from Virginia, where customers can purchase alcohol at a business and carry it through designated areas. Two of these special zones already exist in Arlington. ....

Based on building code changes and technological improvements that allow for taller stick-built construction, OP aims to raise the threshold to 85 feet. The District of Columbia Office of Planning (OP) recently issued a status report in response to a request by the Zoning Commission (Commission) to review the existing Inclusionary Zoning (IZ) program and provide recommendations to create additional affordable housing opportunities in the District. The program, which is being referred to as IZ XL, was presented to the Commission during its public meeting on Dec. 17, 2020.
OP generally recommends that the Commission adopt a progressive approach that proceeds with phased amendments to the IZ regulations. The first phase of changes would: 1) make IZ applicable to certain areas within historic districts and to conversions from nonresidential to residential, and 2) update the required IZ set-aside relative to construction type. OP will simultaneously research potential avenues to make IZ applicable to the D zones, but is proceeding with due caution given their comple ....
