New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern used several key opportunities this month to firmly align the Labour-Green Party government with US imperialism’s escalating economic, diplomatic and military confrontation with China.
Speaking to an audience of diplomats and government officials at the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs conference, “Standing in the Future: New Zealand and the Indo-Pacific Region,” held in Wellington on July 14, Ardern for the first time embraced the phrase “Indo-Pacific” to describe NZ’s foreign policy positioning.
The use of the term by Washington and the Pentagon, rather than the Asia Pacific, signified a significant shift to an integrated strategy towards the Indian and Pacific Oceans aimed at encircling China. The Indo-Pacific Command based in Hawaii took over responsibility for planning and operations in the Indian Ocean and the US has markedly boosted militar ....

China s embassy has summoned New Zealand foreign officials to a meeting after the government voiced criticism of Chinese state-funded hacking, raising industry concerns over trade implications.
The meeting came after the embassy issued a statement yesterday saying the accusations from the minister of New Zealand s spy agencies Andrew Little were totally groundless and irresponsible .
The statement said such accusations should be backed by clear evidence, and doing so without was a malicious smear.

NZ 'sleep-walked' into conflict between China and Western allies - expert

University of Waikato s Dr Reuben Steff said it was clear 10 to 15 years ago that if New Zealand continued to increase exports to China, it would soon end up having to tip-toe between the emerging global super power on the one hand and the US, UK, Australia and Canada on the other.
It was pretty clear that as China s power rose it would eventually start butting heads pretty heavily with the United States and yet we have still sleep-walked into this position, Dr Steff said.
His comments come as an RNZ data analysis shows China now accounts for one third of New Zealand s merchandise export earnings, with more than $11 billion coming from food and beverage exports. In 2020, China was our top buyer of dairy produce, sheep meat, seafood, kiwifruit, honey, water and second biggest buyer of beef. ....
