Covid-19 vaccines have put the end of the pandemic in sight, but success depends on getting shots into arms. Three CNN Heroes are working to bring these life-saving measures to populations who might otherwise be overlooked.
Dr. Jim Withers delivers medical care to homeless people through Operation Safety Net, a program he started through his health system, Pittsburgh Mercy. Now, he is bringing the vaccine to them as well.
Driving to a site or making appointments online . none of this is possible for folks who are living on the street, said Withers, a 2015 CNN Hero. You really have to go to where someone is and cut down those barriers. ....

Even before medical tests showed that Priscilla Odor’s blood-sugar levels were high and her blood pressure and cholesterol levels were just as worrisome, she knew she wasn’t well. The Northeast Philadelphia mother of three was drawn and dragging, hungry all the time but wanting only sweet, sugary foods.
She was also virtually paralyzed by depression. Several years before, she and her children had fled the violence and lawlessness in their native Nigeria. Since then, five of her loved ones had died back home, three of them murdered. So great was Odor’s grief, she could barely bring herself to leave her home. ....

AWARD RECIPIENT Earlier this month, Dr. Charn S. Nandra was honored as Ohio’s 2020 Free Clinic Physician of the Year by the Columbus-based Charitable Healthcare Network. Nandra serves as the volunteer medical director of the Ohio Valley Health Center, 423 South St., Steubenville, formerly the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center, of which he was one of the “founding fathers’ and longest serving volunteers.
