ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Detectives have charged a 15-year-old boy in a January shooting that left two women dead and a man injured at a apartment complex in Northeast Albuquerque.
Josef Toney is charged with two open counts of murder, and one count each armed robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse and tampering with evidence in the Jan. 27 deaths of Aerial Mallam, 21, and Jessica Lucero, 31. A warrant has been issued for Toney’s arrest. ....

APD battles surge of homicides across ABQ

Last month, the Albuquerque Police Department said it had not seen the same spike in homicides experienced by many cities nationwide in 2020.
But faced with 13 killings over the past month – two of them double homicides – interim Chief Harold Medina walked back that sentiment Thursday.

“It’s apparent now that we’re starting to fall in line with a lot of issues that other major cities in the United States are seeing,” Medina said during a briefing outside APD headquarters to address recent homicides.
Medina seemed to blame the surge on stressors – like unstable employment, lack of schooling and mental health concerns – brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

2 dead, 1 injured in NE Albuquerque shooting

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Two women are dead and a man is in the hospital after a shooting Wednesday night in northeast Albuquerque.
Police said they were dispatched to the Jefferson Crossing Apartments around 10 p.m. in response to multiple people being shot.
When officers arrived, they found three victims two women who were pronounced dead at the scene and a man who was taken to UNM Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The women were identified as Jessica Casaus-Lucero, 31, and Aerial Mallam, 21.
The Albuquerque Police Department said it s now investigating 13 homicides in 2021.
Interim Chief of Police, Harold Medina, believes frustration during the pandemic is leading to crime. ....
