Hudson County commissioners discuss exiting ICE deal, advocates call for no new jail contracts

“In light of Essex County’s movement to try to get out of their ICE [contract], it’s making me change my tune on how we want to stand on this as a county, and where we go from here,” Board Chair Anthony Vainieri (D-8) said about 45 minutes into the meeting.
“I’m open to suggestions, I’m open to speaking with the county executive’s administration and our federal representatives … to find a path to exit … I’m looking to try to mirror Essex County.”
Vainieri’s comments are similar to what he told several media outlets including HCV after Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo announced plans to get out of their ICE deal by taking inmates from Union County, whose jail operations are mostly closing in the coming months. ....

Several residents spoke in favor of the resolution, which was sponsored by Ward E Councilman James Solomon, during the public portion of the meeting.
Eleana Little, of the Progressive Democrats of Hudson County, said several colleges, including Rutgers University, put out a report that examines how storms will impact the state.
“They expect the average annual hurricane-related damages in New Jersey to increase by 1.3 to $3.1 billion and estimate half of that will be in Hudson County. So we will bear the brunt of that. Locally, we are very susceptible to the impacts of inaction on climate change.” ....

SPACs go public through the typical IPO process. The sponsor is typically an institution or seasoned industry executive and generally focuses on an industry or geography. The full cash raised in IPO is placed in a trust account for the acquisition. If no acquisition takes place, the SPAC will liquidate and return funds to IPO investors. ....
