New Port Bridge Gets A Name: Long Beach International Gateway

LONG BEACH (CNS) - Nearly eight months after it opened, the new bridge traversing the Port of Long Beach finally got a name today.
The span that replaced the aging and too-small Gerald Desmond Bridge will henceforth be known as “Long Beach International Gateway, according to Sen. Lena Gonzalez and Assemblyman Patrick O Donnell, both D-Long Beach.
“The community has spoken and they made a great choice, O Donnell said in a statement. “The name `Long Beach International Gateway Bridge appropriately signifies Long Beach as the gateway to the American economy. Thank you to the community for helping us in this very important endeavor. ....

Arts Council for Long Beach and Port of Long Beach launch Create Your Own Container

On April 02, 2021 the Port of Long Beach and the Arts Council for Long Beach launched Create Your Own Container, a Do-It-Yourself container project designed by local artist and designer Nick Zegel. You can watch the tutorial video for step-by-step details and download the PDF to participate. Prints of the design will also be available as an insert in the Gazettes Newspaper on April 15, 2021. We invite everyone to share your creations on Instagram by using hashtags #artslb and #portoflongbeach. When you build a bridge, the kind ships go under and cars go over, you’d think it’d be something that always kind of stuck with you. But Bob Schraeder, project manager for Shimmick Construction on the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement, said it was through experiencing the work of the four artists that chronicled the bridge’s creation that “caused me to remember the challenges we had in construction and the beauty of what we were building. The art captures that, it actually makes you reflect more on the accomplishment.”
