After almost two decades of war, US President Joe Biden has announced that all American forces will leave Afghanistan by September 11. Other NATO allies, including Germany, agreed to leave the country following US move.
The unconditional departure of foreign troops from Afghanistan will leave NATO s local supporters in a difficult position.
Kamal Sadat, a former Afghan deputy minister for youth, told DW that NATO s local employees are likely to suffer after the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.
Once they leave, former local employees will become easy targets for insurgents because they consider NATO s Afghan employees as foreign targets, Sadat said. ....

“This planned increase in U.S. personnel underscores our commitment to Germany and the entire NATO alliance,” Austin said in his remarks to Germany’s Ministry of Defense.
The increase reverses the policy of the previous administration, which looked to drastically reduce the number of U.S. forces based in Germany. President Joe Biden announced a policy to freeze that process, which included moving the headquarters for the Stuttgart-based U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. The president ordered a global posture review to determine how to best station U.S. forces around the world.  ....

Germany’s Armed Forces seeks recruits for domestic deployment through “voluntary military service in homeland security”
On April 6, Germany’s Ministry of Defence gave the starting signal for “voluntary military service in homeland security.”
Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (Christian Democratic Union, CDU), the State Secretary in the Defence Ministry Peter Tauber and the Deputy Inspector General of the Bundeswehr (Armed Forces) Markus Laubenthal presented the project at a press conference. It initially provides for “a three-month basic military training followed by four months of special training for a total of about 1,000 soldiers.” This would be followed by a “six-year basic assignment as Bundeswehr reserve service members, during which at least five months of service would be performed.” ....
