Three new councillors have been elected to Reading Borough Council (RBC) last week, including a former Zimbabwean diplomat and a former advisor to the McCann family.
There were 17 councillors in total elected in Reading last week at the local elections, with voting taking place on Thursday, May 6, and the winners confirmed at the count on Friday.
Just three of the 17 are new councillors, however, with each of the new members winning after a councillor had stood down from their role.
The three councillors also represent three different political parties.
Two of them come from the same party as the retiring councillor, while the other won by just 10 votes to secure a gain for their party. ....

THE results of the Reading Borough Council elections, which were held yesterday, have been announced.
These include the authority’s Mapledurham, Caversham, Peppard and Thames wards, which cover Caversham and Emmer Green.
In Mapledurham, Isobel Ballsdon held the seat for the Conservatives with 724 votes. She has been a councillor for the past 15 years, having lived in the ward for the past 30 years.
In Caversham, incumbent Richard Davies held the seat for Labour with 1,480 votes. He currently chairs the housing, neighbourhood and leisure committee. 
In Thames, Paul Carnell held the seat for the Conservative Party, with 1,561 votes. He was first elected in 2019.  ....

Travellers in Reading could soon get a temporary home, with a councillor revealing plans for a ‘transit site’.
Transit sites are short-term stopping place for the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community and differ from permanent sites which residential pitches longer term occupation.
Plans for a traveller site at Richfield Avenue fell through in 2018 when the site was chosen for new secondary school River Academy, which is set to open later this year.
Reading Borough Council (RBC) is now looking for a new site and will reveal its plans “fairly soon”, according to Councillor Tony Page, the authority’s current lead member for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport. ....
