Deadline Detroit | Attorney Norman Lippitt, who defended Detroit cops in the Algiers Motel trial, dies at 85

e was a brilliant, naturally gifted attorney. He knew how to read a courtroom."
Norman Lippitt, a "brilliant" lawyer intially known for successfully defending white police accused of beatings and murder at the Algiers Motel during the 1967 riots, died Monday from complications from bladder cancer that turned to bone cancer. The 85-year-old Bloomfield Hills resident died at home under hospice care.
For 17 years, until 1984, Lippitt was the lead counsel for the Detroit Police Officers Association, defending cops in high-profile cases, often involving brutality and murder. Before that, he was a Wayne County assistant prosecutor.
"He did those cases because they were his clients and he was going to win for them, that's what lawyers do," said Brian O'Keefe, Lippitt's law partner for 32 years. "You don't make a moral judgment when you're trying to win for your client."

Biden nominates David Cohen as ambassador to Canada - JusticeNewsFlash.com

Biden nominates David Cohen as ambassador to Canada
US President Joe Biden nominated David Cohen, a technology executive who had served as the chief of staff of the Mayor of Philadelphia, as his ambassador to Canada.
Cohen is a lawyer, lobbyist and fundraiser, currently serving as a senior consultant to the head of the US communications giant Comcast (Comcast), and has long been considered a possible candidate.
In addition to holding multiple positions in various departments of Comcast, The White House Biography says Cohen also serves as the company’s chief diversity officer.
But he is no stranger to politics: In addition to serving as the company’s main lobbyist, Cohen also served as chief of staff to Philadelphia Mayor Ed Lundell for five years in the 1990s.

Vaccines may 'blunt' a 4th wave — but delta variant could surge among unvaccinated Manitobans: experts

Some experts believe a fourth wave in Manitoba is likely to be more of a molehill than mountain thanks to increasing rates of vaccination, but one highly contagious variant may still threaten to surge in communities with lower vaccination rates.

Watch Des Moines Symphony's last livestream concert of 2021-22

Is it finally over?
The Des Moines Symphony will perform the last livestreamed show of its 2020-21 “Live from the Temple” season, titled "Fantaisie en Français," at 7 p.m. Thursday.
There's one more virtual show, the annual "Yankee Doodle Pops," on July 2 before the symphony resumes performances with a live audience with its "Water Works Pops" shows at Lauridsen Amphitheater in September.
After that, the hope is to stage a 2021-22 season post-pandemic style. That means a careful return to in-person audiences, said symphony spokeswoman Megan Helmers.
"Following our in-person concerts at Water Works Park on Labor Day weekend, our goal is to launch our 84th Season at the Civic Center in September 2021," Helmers said in an email. "We hope to have more details to announce sometime in June, including concert dates, repertoire, guest artists, and health and safety protocols for audiences."

Detroit police chief not ruling out governor bid during retirement announcement

Detroit Police Chief James Craig refused to rule out a bid to challenge Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer during a press conference announcing his retirement on Monday.
Craig revealed that he is "voluntarily" departing the force as he detailed a multitude of accomplishments in the law enforcement body, which was previously characterized by instability and poor working conditions. The announcement follows a flurry of media reports suggesting the top officer would seek to unseat Whitmer, who has received a wave of criticism over her stringent protocols since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
When asked about the rumors, Craig said he has "not made that decision" but is "not ruling it out.” The Detroit native, who began his law enforcement career in 1977, added that he's been a Republican for the last 10 to 11 years, though his political views did not affect his policies in a Democratic-majority area.
