“We’ve had robots within police services probably going back to the 70s,” WPS Chief Danny Smyth said in a press conference at the Winnipeg Police Museum on Wednesday. “Generally they were limited in their mobility, because they were on tracks or wheels. They can’t go up stairs. They can’t go on rough terrain. So having robots in the service dealing with crisis and armed and barricaded work is nothing new. What’s unique about this is it kind of looks like a dog for starters. It has the ability to advance on uneven terrain. It can go upstairs. It can carry things on a harness. It has photography.”

Feds invest $12.7M to help Richardson International bounce back

Around $7 million will cover improvements to taxiways and other paved surfaces, while $5.7 million is allocated for airport operations and essential services, the Government of Canada said in a statement on Tuesday, adding investments in airports ensure Canada’s air transportation system provides travellers with choice, efficiency and affordability. Half the cost of airport upgrades announced Tuesday will be covered by the Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA).

New border rules for vaxxed Yanks won't mean immediate boost for airport

MacAfee said at this stage it’s difficult to predict the level of cross-border travel, adding there are many reasons why Americans travel to Manitoba, including business, visiting family and vacationing at northern fishing lodges. The airport, he explained, is seeing an uptick regardless of the rule change.
“We are seeing more people travelling now that some of the provincial restrictions have been lifted for vaccinated travellers,” he said. “As our vaccination levels go up as a province and a country we are starting to see more people comfortable with travelling, which is definitely as positive sign.”
The airport normally handles between 12,000 and 13,000 passengers a day pre-pandemic. From a low of around 100 a day in April 2020, the numbers are slowly climbing to between 3,000 and 4,000 a day.

Lukes said it’s unfair that members of the mayor’s staff have received robust salary increases, while city councillors – she says – are dealing with high staff turnover rates caused by lower wages and high workload.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for affordable housing and has led to rising homelessness, the CMHC said in a press release on Monday. As a result, $12.8 million is being spent to build around 51 new affordable housing units for individuals and families in Winnipeg through the Cities Stream of the expanded federal Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI). The housing, to be finished in “12 months or less,” will support people in precarious housing situations and those experiencing homelessness.
