Once, while driving across the semi-desert known as the Karoo of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, I chanced upon a town of about 35,000 souls called Graaff-Reinet, with which I instantly fell in love. Its streets were charming, historic and everywhere festooned with jacaranda trees in full bloom.
Dining there in a local hall one night, with great high beams above my head, I thought I had arrived in a little paradise. Later, I discovered that I was not the first to think so. Apparently, the Victorian explorer David Livingstone had said of Graaff-Reinet that it was the prettiest town in all Africa. ....

“Moffie,” a new South African movie billed as an apartheid-era “queer war film,” tells the story of the closeted 16-year-old Nicholas (Kai Luke Brummer) and his conscription into South Africa’s military service to fight a war against communist Angola in the 1980s. The film, in movie theaters and On Demand platforms, is based on André Carl van der Merwe’s autobiographical novel “Moffie” a homophobic slur. It explores with great nuance the complex realities of apartheid-era South Africa and the dangerous ideologies pervasive in its solely white male armed forces. BELLEVILLE, NJ Belleville community members on Saturday including members of a local girl scout troop and American Legion Post 105 placed wreaths on the headstones of some 90 veterans interred in St. Peter s Church cemetery.
The first wreath was placed my Belleville mayor Michael Melham after a prayer from Father Ivan Sciberras. Each year, Melham pays respect to Belleville s former Mayor Waters, who served in World War I. ....
