Nobrega's Variety, one of Toronto's most beloved neighbourhood bodegas, is permanently closing after more than half a century on Dovercourt Road.
The local corner store at 209 Dovercourt Rd. will be shuttering permanently following a rent hike by the building's new owners.
The family that runs Nobrega's, who did not want to be named for the article, confirmed the shop's last day will be June 10.
News of the convenience store's imminent closure has rocked the Beaconsfield neighbourhood, which has relied on this family-run one-stop shop for years.

Living within walking distance of a subway station is absolutely clutch for anyone in Toronto who needs to commute, but doesn't have their own car and / or the patience to sit in gridlock traffic every afternoon at rush hour.
Sure, the TTC isn't perfect, but its subway system will generally take you farther across the city, much faster and cheaper than any other mode of transportation.
Developers and landlords know this, hence the premium values put on rental units with easy access to public transit (and in particular, to major subway lines.)

For those who say they limit themselves to only one baked good per day, there's a new creative way around that promise.
Geste Croissanterie on Dundas West has started offering croissants that are big enough to fill you up and then some.
Measuring at about 10 inches wide and 350g, the custom made XXL croissants have become a must try for those who want both quality and quantity.

A second Toronto neighbourhood has reported yet another rash of break-ins and vandalism following a crime spree over Mother's Day weekend.
A slew of businesses in and around Leslieville reported being broken into and robbed between Sunday night and early Monday morning, according to businesses.
According to a post made Monday by Billy Truong, owner of Billy's Burgers on Pape, his restaurant was one of six businesses known so far to have been affected by the crime spree.

Daily COVID-19 cases must be “well below 1,000” before restrictions lift: Williams
3:16 pm Ontario will need to get “well below” 1,000 daily new cases before restrictions can lift, Chief Medical Officer of Health David Williams said today.
Asked for the data thresholds the province will use in determining when to lift restrictions, Williams said he used fewer than 1,000 daily cases during the first wave but during the second wave cases only dropped below 1,000 for a few days before the third wave began.

String of Toronto break-ins leaves neighbourhood restaurants in shock

A Toronto neighbourhood that's had a string of break-ins at restaurants and other businesses has left owners shaken.
Less than two weeks ago, OMG Baked Goodness on Dundas West was broken into (the business turning the incident into a funny video/marketing opportunity), cafe-turned-grocer Safehouse just a few doors down was hit around the same time, on Apr. 11.
Alchemy at College and Delaware was broken into early morning Apr. 24, and Bluebird near Dundas and Roncesvalles suffered the same fate just a couple of days ago. All robberies had a similar M.O.: a glass door was smashed in order to gain access to the handle inside.
