Homelessness issues ramped up in region, Lima Housing Task Force learns

LIMA The Lima Housing Task Force took up the issue of homelessness and housing instability at its monthly meeting Tuesday.
Meeting virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the task force heard a discussion by Tammie Colon with the Mental Health Recovery Services Board, Hellen Douglas from Family Promise, Jackie Fox from West Ohio Community Action Partnership and Russ Thomas from Connected Hope.
“We have been working with lots of partners for the past 10 years, and we’ve done a pretty good job of meeting the needs of clients in a very small way,” Fox said. “We do know how to end homelessness. We need affordable housing where you only spend 30% of your income on housing, and we need adequate income.”
Housing project gains support from Lima council

LIMA The case to spend $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant dollars on supportive family housing gained some backing during Lima City Council’s meeting of the whole Monday night.
Altogether, five councilors voiced support for the spending after seeking more details about the proposed project. Initially categorized as an isolation and quarantine facility, subsequent conversations have since laid out how a dozen social service agencies in the city are hoping to leverage the proposed $500,000 as seed money to create a 14- to 16-unit development to be used to support families in need.
Activate highlights community approach to health

LIMA Activate Allen County provided an update of its programs, as well as insights into some of its future goals in housing, suicide prevention and children’s health, during an online community stakeholder meeting held Tuesday.
The 45-minute presentation featured multiple local officials from the group’s various members laying out some of the larger problems they are hoping to address in the community in the next few years as part of its Community Health Improvement Plan.
For example, Mental Health and Recovery Services Board CEO Tammie Colon highlighted the relation between suicide and drug use to talk about some of the local efforts to reduce suicide rates. They include recruiting behavioral specialists, increasing the availability of Narcan and trying to target prevention among youth.
