705 The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) has urged all stakeholders to step up the fight against malaria. It said it was acceptable that thousands of people, mainly children and pregnant women continue to die needlessly of a disease that could be prevented and treated. A statement issued in Accra and signed by the Executive Secretary of AMMREN, Dr Charity Binka, to mark this year’s World Malaria Day said over the past two decades, great progress had been made in the malaria fight, saving more than seven million lives and preventing over one billion new malaria cases. The statement said in 2019, the global tally of malaria cases were 229 million and the disease claimed some 409 000 lives in 2019 compared to 411 000 in 2018. The African Region for its part continues to shoulder more than 90 per cent of the overall disease burden. Since 2000, the region has reduced its malaria death toll by 44 per cent, from an estimated 680 000 to 384 000 annuall ....

Invest in fight against malaria to fill funding gap AMMREN urges African govts April 26, 2021 Dr Charity Binka, Executive Secretary of AMMREN The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), a Pan-African advocacy group of journalists and scientists, has called on governments of malaria endemic countries to invest in the fight against malaria to fill the funding gap. According to the group, unless countries found innovative ways to mobilise adequate resources to bridge the funding gap, malaria resurgence would likely take more lives in Africa. This was contained in a statement signed and issued by Dr Charity Binka, Executive Secretary of AMMREN, in Accra yesterday on the occasion of this year’s World Malaria Day. ....
Nationwide anti-malaria campaign: 30m mosquito nets to be distributed from April March 26, 2021 Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye,D-G,GHS As part of the country’s malaria pre-eradication drive, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is to distribute 30 million Long-Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) across the country. The door-to-door distribution and hang-up mass nationwide campaign to be implemented by the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and its partners will begin in April this year starting from the Northern, Upper East, North East and Savannah regions. Mr Christian Atta-Obeng of the Vector Control Unit of the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) said it forms part of NMCP’s 2021- 2025 strategic plan to reduce malaria cases to 50 per cent and also reduce malaria deaths by 90 per cent. ....
