Met Police chief defends officers for 'doing their duty' during Sarah Everard vigil

12:08 EDT, 17 March 2021
A top Met Police boss has today defended the actions of officers at the Sarah Everard vigil saying they were 'doing their duty', after the force faced accusations of heavy-handedness.
Deputy Commissioner Sir Stephen House claimed police had faced abuse and had plastic water bottles thrown at them after asking crowds to disperse from Saturday's memorial event at Clapham Common.
He refused to apologise on behalf of officers, who he said had acted 'professionally and proportionately'.
Sir Stephen said the vigil had complied with Covid rules during the day, but had become 'compacted' in the evening as more people gathered.

Gifted student Libby Squire was 'in the best place she had ever been' before she was murdered

Libby Squire was 'in the best place in her life she had ever been' when she was raped and murdered by Pawel Relowicz.
The gifted student had been through difficulties with her mental health during her A Levels but after a year out spent travelling she threw herself into her studies at Hull University, where she'd received an unconditional offer.
She had good friends and enjoyed to go out and party, but was still in touch with her mother Lisa Squire by phone or text every day.
The silence that followed her planned night out on January 31, 2019, triggered a mother's instinct that something terrible had befallen the eldest child she affectionately knew as 'Pie.'

Priti Patel calls for 'action' against food firm Chartwells behind 'appalling' free school meals

Meal scheme will switch for half-term
The free meal system for school pupils will change over the February half term – as the government tries to balance its books by using a different department’s funding for the food.
In a switchover that has the potential to spark some administration issues, meals for those that need it will continue, but paid for from a different area.
Currently the Department for Education are in charge of providing cash for school meals during the coronavirus outbreak in term-times.
But when half term arrives something called the Covid Winter Grant Scheme, which comes from the DWP, will supply the money. It has £170m of funds.
