SHARE This month, the Dubai government launched Al Quoz Creative Zone, a new hub for creative businesses, including those involved in the visual arts, cinema, music and cultural heritage, to be located in the industrial area of Al Quoz. To kickstart the initiative, Dubai Culture conducted the first Al Quoz Accelerators workshop, aimed at bringing together committee members from the creative community in order to discuss development plans for the zone and to outline courses of action for the next 100 days. As a collective effort, our ultimate goal is to become a centre of attraction for creative talents from around the world and to become a global community and capital for the creative economy. ....
Dubai: The creative talents who participated in the Al Quoz Accelerators workshop praised it as an incubator for innovation and enabler for the country’s creative industry. Launched by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), in cooperation with its partners at Alserkal Avenue, the workshop also affirmed Al Quoz Creative Zone development project’s role in empowering the creative industry. Mohammed Saeed Hareb Mohammed Saeed Hareb, who participated in the workshop, said: “The workshop produced important outputs to address the challenges that the creative community experiences in Al Quoz, including the provision for business licences, identifying the type of rental contracts and zoning among others. Frameworks that are put in place to facilitate these matters will have a ripple effect that will positively affect other sectors.” ....
Phoenix in the Courtyard: Total Arts hosts show in new space 17 Jan 2021 Features Writer The current show at Total Arts at Courtyard, Dubai, titled “Second Life” (Jan. 9 Mar. 9), is an exhibition of repurposed objects, artworks and installations, displayed in the new space of Total Arts. It marks the second life of the former furniture store at the Courtyard. “Second Life” acts as a reminder to reconsider our surroundings from space to materials, and act on them to serve a better purposeful function visually and conceptually. The exhibition contains artworks and design objects of various sizes, addressing environmental consciousness, preservation and sustainability as their focal point, whether in the choice of medium or concept. ....
Naima Shalhoub: Naima Shalhoub is a Lebanese Arab-American vocalist, composer, performing artist, and educator based in the Bay Area. Her multidimensional work explores the borderlands of belonging, remembrance, freedom, and the expansive quality of the voice - its power for healing and energizing social justice movements. Her first full-length studio album, Siphr, was released on August 6th, 2020. Her debut album, Live in San Francisco County Jail, was recorded alongside an audience of incarcerated women with whom she had been facilitating weekly Music and Freedom sessions for one year (many of whom participated in the performance). Produced in solidarity with movements to end the prison-industrial complex, the recording embodies Naima s deeply-held belief that it is an artist s duty to reflect the times (Nina Simone). ....
