The UK launched its National Data Strategy last September, after more than two years of Brexit-inspired hiatus, bafflement, shoulder-shrugging, and pettifogging. Yet just a few months earlier in March, 2020 s Westminster eForum on UK data strategy had presented an alarming picture of rudderless government.
At that event, Gaia Marcus, then UK Head of Data Strategy, said:
We knew that we had the solution [the data strategy], but we weren t clear on the problem. So, back in the Middle Ages of this project, when the team was focusing on the work, I commissioned a call for evidence to actually understand that, if we ve all agreed that the national strategy is the solution to a problem, what actually is the problem? ....

West Midlands Police (WMP) is the second-largest Police Force in the UK, covering the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton, equivalent to 348 square miles (900 square kilometres). It sees its mission as working to create a safer community for the 2.8 million citizens it serves, preventing crime and helping those in need.
As with any major Police Force, WMP deals with a lot of data, which increases through every interaction it has with the public, from the 2000 emergency calls it receives daily to the work cases officers handle on the streets. This is all now being handled a lot better after work from enterprise data cloud specialists Cloudera working with Accenture, who have created one new core data hub, the Data Driven Insights Project. ....

The OECD is hoping to reach a global solution on the challenge of taxing digital services, which mostly affects US companies.
With Donald Trump no longer occupying the White House, there is hope that the US will be taking a less combative approach to global trade issues and that President Biden will take a more collaborative, conciliatory stance. High on the agenda in 2021 is the ongoing fight over how countries fairly tax digital services, which in reality mostly impacts the US tech giants.
And time is of the essence, as the OECD aims to reach an agreement by this Summer, before more countries begin taking a nationalistic approach to the issue. The likes of the UK, France and Spain have all either signalled or already implemented their own digital services tax plans - and plan to persist with them if an internationally agreed solution is not found. ....
