Nani Jansen Reventlow

VISIONARY No. 9
Nani Jansen Reventlow is the tech activists’ fairy godmother. The human rights lawyer founded the Digital Freedom Fund, which helps digital rights groups launch strategic litigation cases. The fund helps activists on a shoestring test the limits of Europe’s privacy rules, and sets legal standards for how they are interpreted and applied in the process.
Reventlow’s work is especially valuable when it comes to one of Europe’s blindspots: race. The fund was involved in a high-profile case against the Dutch government’s use of an automated surveillance system for detecting welfare fraud — an AI system that disproportionately targeted ethnic minorities. (The case also led to the collapse of the government.) Last year, the DFF set up a litigation fund for COVID-related offences. The DFF also helped French digital rights group La Quadrature du Net (also on this list) file a lawsuit last year to overturn the government’s expansion of the criminal record database to include COVID-19 lockdown infringement records.

Statewatch | Netherlands: Racism and Technology Center launches to highlight racism in Dutch society

Netherlands: Racism and Technology Center launches to highlight racism in Dutch society
09 April 2021
A newly-launched Racism and Technology Center will analyse and highlight how technology perpetuates racism and racist practices in Dutch society, as part of an effort to “help in fighting systemic injustices and oppression,” say its founders.
The goal of the
Racism and Technology Center, which is run on a voluntary basis by Naomi Appelman, Jill Toh and Hans de Zwart, is to take an active role in public discussions on the racism perpetuated by digital technologies. In addition, the group aim to guide and find funding for young and upcoming activists, journalists and researchers who want to take a deep dive into the topic and produce original work that furthers the debate.

The current Dutch Cabinet is led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who presides over a coalition made up of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, Christian Democratic Appeal, Democrats 66 and the Christian Union. But the grouping collapsed earlier this year and now, in the run-up to parliamentary elections later this month, centre-right and extreme right parties are taking the lead in the polls. According to polls conducted by Politico, The People’s Party for Freedom (VVD), a centre-right party led by Mr Rutte, continues to lead. The party is expected to gain seats compared to the last election. The opposition far-right nationalist Party for Freedom (PVV), led by Geert Wilders, is running just behind the VVD in polls, and is also expected to increase the number of seats held in Parliament.

How Covid-19 Is Stifling Digital Rights in Zimbabwe

Global Voices
ON the morning of July 30, 2020, Zimbabweans awoke to the presence of heavily armed soldiers standing ready to crush anti-government protests scheduled to take to the streets the following day. No one was permitted entry into the central business district. The official line was that protests were prohibited in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
A few days prior, social media — particularly WhatsApp and Twitter — was abuzz with citizens sharing Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications to download, just in case the government shut down the internet again, as they did during protests in January 2019.
Covid-19 and its subsequent government policies have had far-reaching implications on digital rights and media freedom in Zimbabwe.
