Brian Michael Smith: 'Being Black And Trans Is A Story That Needs Telling'

In What Works For Me – a series of articles considering how we can find balance in our lives – we talk to celebrities about wellbeing and self-care.
Brian Michael Smith made headlines in 2017 when he came out as trans after years working in TV where he’d made a name largely playing cisgender roles.
But it was two years later that he landed the role that made him a household name in the US – in Ryan Murphy’s spinoff procedural drama 9-1-1: Lone Star, opposite 1980s heart-throb Rob Lowe. The series wrapped its first season before the pandemic hit, but speaking to HuffPost UK, Smith says he feared the show that propelled him into the mainstream might never return. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: San Francisco supervisors set to approve leather district historical sidewalk markers

A plan to commemorate 50 locations tied to San Francisco s leather and LGBTQ culture with sidewalk markers is expected to win approval from the Board of Supervisors this week. It is timed to coincide with an underway streetscape improvement project along Folsom Street that at one point was known as the city s Miracle Mile.
It earned that nickname due to the many gay bars and bathhouses that operated on or near the main artery through the South of Market district in the 1960s and 1970s. But the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s soon would diminish SOMA s leather scene. The health crisis resulted in most gay bathhouses and sex clubs in the area closing their doors. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: SF Japantown site with LGBTQ ties nears city landmark status

A historic Japantown site with ties to LGBTQ history is close to becoming the first property tied to San Francisco s Japanese American community to be designated a city, state and national landmark. Having already won California and federal recognition, the site is set to secure city recognition later this month.
The Board of Supervisors land use and transportation committee voted 3-0 Monday in support of naming the Japanese YWCA/Issei Women s Building at 1830 Sutter Street a city landmark. The full board is expected to adopt the landmark request at its April 13 meeting.
It will become only the second local historic property related to San Francisco s Japanese community and the fifth having to do with the LGBTQ community to be granted such recognition. The city s historic preservation commission endorsed granting it local landmark status in November, months after the property was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: Political Notes: With out candidates announcing Assembly bids, race is on to bolster CA LGBTQ caucus

With the one-year mark until California s June 2022 primary election quickly approaching, focus is already turning to which contests for state Assembly and Senate seats will draw LGBTQ candidates. The speculation was ramped up by Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur s recent launch of his bid for an open Los Angeles County Assembly seat.
With it exceedingly rare for an incumbent member of the state Legislature to be defeated at the ballot box, most candidates wait until a seat opens up to run. Under the state s term limit rules, the winners can serve for up to 12 years and are likely to face little opposition when they seek reelection. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: California bill to ban unnecessary surgeries on intersex children stalls

A California bill to ban medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex children has once again stalled in a state Senate committee. Its backers will now assess whether to try and pass the legislation in 2022.
Gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) had resubmitted his legislation Senate Bill 225, known as the Bodily Autonomy, Dignity and Choice Act, in January with the hope of moving it out of the Legislature this session. He had worked with intersex advocates and LGBTQ rights groups to revise it from previous versions, such as indicating a precise age for when such surgeries could be performed.
Thus, this year s bill would have required parents and doctors to postpone elective surgery on intersex children until they are 6 years of age and can take part in making such a medical decision. It was later amended to designate the age at 12 years old. Nevertheless, the legislation again failed to muster enough support to pass out of the Senate s Committee on Business, Pr ....
