Mexico tech school board passes $2.3 million budget

MEXICO The board of directors of Region 9 School of Applied Technology approved $2.3 million budget Wednesday.
The vocational school’s director, Brenda Gammon, said health insurance costs were $47,000 less than expected for 2021-22.
The total budget is $2,314 less than this fiscal year, which ends June 30.
Residents of the 16 towns sending students to the school will vote on the budget at 6 p.m. May 5 at the school at 377 River Road in Mexico. The towns are Rumford, Mexico, Roxbury, Hanover, Bethel, Newry, Woodstock, Greenwood, Dixfield, Canton, Carthage, Peru, Andover, Byron, Gilead and Upton.
In other business during the Zoom meeting, the board approved hiring Mason King as a full-time IT specialist starting July 1. He has been working one day a week at the school. ....

MEXICO Region 9 School of Applied Technology’s proposed budget for 2021-22 represents a decrease of $2,314 to this year’s budget, according to school Director Brenda Gammon.
At a budget hearing last Thursday, Gammon provided reasons for why the proposed $2.3 million budget is less than current spending.
The Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico. The school enrolls students from Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, Dirigo High School in Dixfield and Telstar High School in Bethel.
Those reasons include removal of the school’s cooperative education program, a change made because all three of its partner high schools Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, Dirigo High School in Dixfield and Telstar High School in Bethel “have similar programs as to our cooperative education (program),” according to Gammon. ....

DIXFIELD Directors of the technology, special education and property departments for Regional School Unit 56 presented their budget proposals to directors Tuesday night.

Technology Director Brian Keene, Building, Grounds and Transportation Director Kenny Robbins and Special Education Director Heidi Connelly said they tried to keep amounts the same as the 2020-21 budget.
Keene listed four major goals: “improving parent and community communication; continuing to improve students’ access to online educational materials through our network; increasing effectiveness and reliability of our technology equipment; and continuing to provide quality one-to-one (computer) devices to all of our students, pre-K through 12.” ....
