Unalaska City School District officials are planning for a limited in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021 on May 15.
There will likely be some restrictions on who is allowed to join the 25 seniors as they turn their tassels, according to Superintendent John Conwell.
Due to the physical distancing requirements needed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is anticipated that only the graduates and their families will be able to attend the ceremony in person, Conwell said.
Those restrictions are subject to change depending on how the pandemic progresses over the next few weeks, he said. ....

Dillingham high school senior Sawyer Sands represented Alaska as a U.S. Senate Youth Program delegate this month. Alaska s other delegate was Nych?? Andrew of Anchorage.
Normally, the program is held in Washington, D.C., and the students meet with a variety of national leaders. This year it was virtual.
Sands said the program coordinators tried to make the experience as normal as possible, but the virtual conference had its challenges.
The Zoom calls - it was taxing, Sands said. Probably 12 hours spent in front of the camera with intermittent breaks - sometimes not long enough. But you really can t overstate how well they tried to compensate us for that. ....

In 1900, Alaska was home to Native people in scattered villages and camps and recently arrived miners who scraped the creeks for gold. Many of the 60,000 souls on the rivers and hills of Alaska stumbled through a big shake that fall, especially those living on Kodiak Island.
The largest earthquake on the planet that year happened somewhere near Kodiak on Oct. 9, 1900. Scientists know it was big, but how big? And could it happen again?
Seismologist Carl Tape wanted to know more about the great 1900 earthquake. He works at University of Alaska Fairbanks??? Geophysical Institute, studying Alaska earthquakes and what causes them. He became interested in the 1900 earthquake because he suspected it was a big one, maybe a magnitude 8. ....

Twenty-nine Dillingham residents tested positive for COVID-19 in February, according to the city. That is the most resident cases the community has seen in a month.
Three of those cases were reported last week, between Feb. 20 - 26. According to the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation those cases are travel-related. The people who tested positive and their households were advised to isolate, and the state public health team is contact tracing.
Thirteen cases were reported in the first week of February ?? that???s almost half of the total case count for the month. ....
